Slipping Into A Style Rut

Even with the best of intentions, it’s all too easy to slip into a style rut…

When we first went into lockdown here in the UK I made a vow to myself that I would get up, dress up and show up every day – and I kept to it (most of the time!)

Style is an essential part of my self care routine; if I don’t look/feel good in my clothes it affects my levels of productivity, my state of mind and overall sense of wellbeing. It’s something I care passionately about, which is why it was such a focus for me during lockdown #1.

However, with days spent at home and no face-to-face clients I inevitably took a more relaxed approach to my style. I may not have been in hoodies and joggers all day but I was reaching for the relaxed, casual options much, much more – and it’s a theme that seems to have continued since.

What I realised was, I’d slipped into a style rut – even though I was conscious of putting together outfits which made me feel good, I had become a bit too comfortable in the jeans/jumper combos and was rarely reaching for anything that elevated my everyday style beyond this….

So I’ve decided I’m going to take a different approach to lockdown style part 2…

This time around I plan to ensure my outfits are varied and elevated from my usual go-to pieces – don’t get me wrong, I love my jeans, but all too often they’re a default option that I reach for because they don’t require much thought or effort (as everything goes with jeans, right?!)

So I thought I would share what I’m intending to do for lockdown style part 2 to help you make the most of your wardrobe over the next four weeks…

  • Wear everything you own once before re-wearing anything. This is something I advise my clients to do ALL THE TIME and I haven’t done it myself in ages. It’s good for SO many reasons and I guarantee you’ll re-discover old gems as well as declutter items that no longer look/feel great when you wear them.

  • Find three ways to wear each item. Easy for some pieces but for others this will challenge you to get creative with how you wear things. Think about accessories, layers, footwear and belts to change the look/feel of items like dresses which we generally will only wear one way.

  • Keep footwear as a focus for each outfit. If you’re going to be working from home more in the coming weeks then clothes become key to compartmentalising your time and differentiating between the start/end of the day. During lockdown part 1 I got fully dressed, shoes and all, even if I was just around the house. I would then take them off and change into my comfies to mark the end of the day, just I would do had I been out and about all day. It may seem a bit silly/simple but it makes a big difference!

  • Accessorise. The temptation when you’re not seeing anybody all day is to ditch the accessories – DON’T! Wear them for YOU. My accessories are such a integral part of my signature style that when I don’t wear them I feel naked. They are also a collection of things I’ve been gifted by those I love or picked up on my travels so they are lovely reminders of the people and places that are close to my heart.

  • Put your face on. I definitely wear less make-up when I’m not seeing face-to-face clients but I always wear SOME. That way I feel more polished and put together. Like I say, it just needs to be a little but it really does go a long way in ensuring you feel good.

So that’s what I’ll be doing for the next month as well as staying active and eating healthily to give me as much of a boost as possible.
