Body Image and the Magic of Self Love

Today’s blog post comes from Catherine Asta Labbett, a Psychotherapist who works with women, all over the world, transforming them to achieve Disco Ball Sparkle.

Let’s start by debunking the myth.

Positive body image is NOT about being skinny, or about aspiring to look like someone else or about wanting to change what we look like because we don’t like what we see staring back at us in the mirror.

We are bombarded with images and messages that aren’t real or authentic and there’s a multi-billion pound industry on hand to help you change how you look. But it’s a sticking plaster on a much deeper wound, because body confidence happens on the inside. No amount of outside investment is going to change how you feel deep inside your soul.

As a Psychotherapist, I transform women to achieving Disco Ball Sparkle. We go on a massive journey together during my therapy programme and the gift at the end is the gift of self acceptance, self love and self worth – these are the things that are so intrinsically linked to a positive body image.

When I meet clients for the first time, what they are wearing, their body language and their behaviour speak a thousand words. How they present themselves to the world, as well as their self-talk give me an insight into where they are on the self love barometer.

I’ve worked with 100’s of women and I’ve witnessed these women come out the other side and transform how they feel about themselves, which is why my work is in such synergy with Anna, because once your eyes are opened and you’ve got that sparkle back, with it comes a whole new confidence and sense of self. It is life changing.

If I had to sum up positive body image, and what it looks and feels like, this is it….

  1. You are able to put images of perfection to one side, because part of your belief system is knowing that ‘Life doesn’t have to be perfect’. You accept that perfection doesn’t exist and that beauty comes in all forms. You are comfortable in your skin. You embrace your features. You don’t need to change how you look on the outside (this is a liberating part of the art of self love for so many of my clients). You don’t need to keep buying stuff to make you feel better.
  2. You put self care first. You nurture and nourish your body and you seek balance. Exercise isn’t a form of punishment for what you’ve eaten. You have respect for your body and what you put in it. Sleep is a priority, as is presence and being ‘in the moment’.
  3. You have the confidence to dress how you want and a style mantra to match. You don’t worry about what others think about what you are wearing. You believe that you are good enough and worthy and lovable and this is reflected in your style and your presence. You value others opinions but you don’t rely on others opinions to validate your self worth.

"Loving yourself is THE greatest revolution. The universe is ready and waiting for you to unleash that inner sparkle. What are you waiting for?"
