Your Style Mantra

One of the first questions I ask my clients when they come for an image or style session is what words they would use to describe their current wardrobe.

Most people find this task quite difficult but for me it’s really important to understand how they feel about their style when they come to me as it gives me a starting point to work from.

Whether we like it or not, appearances and first impressions count, so it’s important that your personal style is a true reflection of who you are and what you want to represent to the outside world.

If your clothes could speak, what would they say?

Have a think about it now – if your clothes could speak, what WOULD they say?

If the words that spring to mind aren’t particularly appealing then how can you change them? In an ideal world, what would your ‘style mantra’ (as I call it) be?

I find the best place to start when putting together your style mantra is by creating a mood board – either on Pinterest or with good old fashioned magazines, paper and glue – whatever works for you.

As you go through this process you will notice certain themes starting to emerge – this could be particular colours or shapes you’re drawn to, maybe certain styles of clothing (skirts or dresses over trousers for example). The key with this is to do it intuitively – don’t think about practicalities, just select images that you truly LOVE.

Once you’ve done this think about the words you would use to describe your mood board. Is it bold, fun and feminine? Romantic, detailed and quirky? Are there lots of accessories, colour or embellishments?

The next step is to jot these words down and then think about how you can apply them to your own style – during a personal styling session with myself this is where we would start to look at colours, shapes and your style personality and how to can create the image you love in a way that suits you and your lifestyle.

Creating a style mantra will help you to be more mindful about how you dress and aware of the image you're creating with your clothes on a daily basis.
